SWAMI

SWAMI

While the dream-merchants of Bollywood leave no leaf unturned to bring out more and more lavish movies every week, the true cine-maker never seems to be deterred by these vulgar extravaganzas, specially on baseless stories.
Swami is one such example of a parrarel, art or low budget movie, whatever you may call it.
Made with a simple story,a simple plot, simple cast, the movie has a powerful presentation, strong message and a fair amount of clean entertainment for family viewing.
Built around a simple story of a village couple who dare to dream to send their son to America to study and work, the movie brings home a sigh of relief for the common man.
The story very clearly and encouragingly conveys that even in today's time of wealth and rich people,a common man can have his simple dreams and they can be achieved without any miracle or unfair means, just by simple dedication and determination.
Juhi chawla and Manoj Bajpai have played their roles of the village couple beautifully and though the movie gets slow at times, one never looses interest
Swami is an encouraging movie for every common man, with small dreams and who believes that inspite of all its sham and drudgery life even today is worth living

BACHNA AEY HASEENO

GOOD ENTERTAINER!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bachna ye Hasseno, lived up to its expectation,of the great prelaunch hype it got.Even tough it was nothing too great, but overall a good entertainer.
talking of the movie,is basically talking of Ranbir Kapoor,as the movie, seems to have been created to catapult him,to the heights of success

Revolving, around a youngster, played by Ranbir, and his three affairs. One at the age of 18,when he tries to patao a girl, played by Manisha Lamba, for a night stand and she genuinely falls in love, second when he has a long live in affair, with his neighbour, played by Bipasha, but here too,he is not serious, and ditches her on the wedding day.Lastly he genuinely falls in love with a lady taxi driver, played by Padokone(Ranbeer's real life girl freind)but she refuses his proposal as she was not ready to get married, and wanted to live her life, her way.

Crestfallen,he realizes that he has been payed back, for breaking two hearts, and hence goes ahead to undo his wrongs.Manisha is married, with two kids, but the spark is missing in her life,as she has not overcome the shock of her first broken dream.Ranbeer clears all misunderstandings between her and her husband, played by Kunal Kapoor, and brings back happiness in their lives.he then traces bipasha, who is a great model, but a man hater. He takes the job of her assistant and faces all insults hurled by her,as his punishment, and decreases her pain, making up for the wrong that he had done. And as predicted,he is blessed by cupid, and gets his lady love,Padukone, back in his life, and settles with her, happily for eternity!

The story is simple, with reflections of several movies on love stories of the pats, specially DDLJ.The direction, dialogues and cinematography along with choreography are good complimented by great locales.Music is melodious and some songs, specially Ahista Ahista and Khuda Jane have become super hits.Besides DDLJ,the movie has scenes from movies of Rishi Kapoor, like Bobby,Dapliwala and Khel Khel Mein. The title song of the movie, too has been taken, from Dabbus old movie,Ham Kisi Se Kam Nahin.Bipasha has looked sizzling,as always, and has dazzled her assets well, specially in the item number Lucky Boy.The other two ladies have acted well too.

Ranbeer has acted well for a beginer, but has real tough competion, not only from the stablished stars but also from the other beginers like Imran Khan.In the title song,he has succesfully imitated not only Shammi,Randhir and Rishi but also,Sharukh, salman,Rhitik and Akshay and danced well.He voice resembles his dads, and even of randhir, and he could do with some more finesse classes to attain some more polish and even with some diction coaching. He has a long way to go and has to work very hard to take back the RK Banner on the male shoulders, which ofr the last 15 years has been held high by,Karishma and Kareena

KIDNAP

A GOOD THRILLER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kidnap turned out to be a great thriller!

As the title is self explanatory, the movie revolves, around a kidnap, which is unconventional, and has unexpected turns and twists
The story begins, with a 18 year old girl, played by Minisha Lamba, who looks older than that,is kidnapped by a juvenile convict just out of jail, played by Imran Khan.He kidnaps, the girl, who lives with her separated mother,The motive of the crime,is to take revenge, from Sanjay Dutt, the girls father who is a rich businessman. As the story unveils,we are told, that this boy, when small.had taken, this mans car, without his permission, with this girl,to take his injured orphan mate,to the hospital,to prevent an amputation.Even when he returns it,and tries to explain and say sorry, the man refuses to listen and with the power of his money, has the boy behind bars for seven years.

What follows is an interesting chase, where he leaves clues,to be followed,in tracing the girl.Sanjay Dutt is made to say sorry to a nun, steal, help a victim escape from a jail and finally commit a virtual murder. All these were very meticulously planned to crash his ego,and bring him down on his knees, pleading for forgiveness, and to realize that all his, ego, power and wealth were useless,to save his daughter. The movie ends on a pleasant note, with the girl back to her parents, who are together again, and above all the hero and heroine parting on a friendly note, leaving the audience guessing.

This simple plot has been presented beautifully in the movie in a very entertaining manner, creating a good thriller. The emotional aspects have been thrown in nicely too, like the pain of an innocent child being exploited and tortured in jail, seperataions in rich families, despair of a child of divorced parents, coming together of estranged spouses in crises, the values of friendship, the uselessness of materialistic powers, the helplessness of genuine people at times,to do wrong things for a good cause and the virtue of humility and forgiveness. There is a slight innuendo to the Stockholm Syndrome, where the girl gets compassionate towards the man who holds her captive, and decides to help him, when he is injured, and miss a chance of escaping. But the punchline is,that a poor child can risk his life to save his friend, who in turn repays,by successfully helping his friend to get out of the jail, and in turn gets caught, but the rich man has no friend to help him in his life time crisis

The movie succeeds in maintaining a good pace, keeping the viewer guessing and in providing good entertainment.Songs, choreography, music and photography are good.Sanajy Dutt,in spite of his aging has looked smart, and Minisha and her mom have done justice to the roles.Imran Khan is the ultimate winner, who has not only looked hot as the angry young man but has delivered the goods superbly, and acted well for a beginner. He was well suited to the role, and has done justice, but can still do with some classes for diction and dialogue delivery.Has Sabrina Merchant stopped training these youngsters these days?

Imraan has been lucky with two good movies,in quick succession, and in the present competition with the other new facein Bollywood,in Ranbeer Kapoor, stands a clear winner with a score of TWO-Luv,in his favour! Bachna aye Haseeno( and Ranbeer), Imraan aa gaya!!

THE LAST LEAR

DESERVED A BETTER DEAL !

The Last Lear, definitely deserved a better deal.Even after hearing and reading such poor reviews, about the film,I went ahead to watch it,and good that I used my intuitions to guide me,or I would have missed a masterpiece.Like Paheli,Shabd and many other movies, this movie to,is being judged, superficially, without understanding the depth of the reality of life contained in it.Like the Pandora's Box,the story has a three layered story!

The first layer is the movie on its face,as it is presented, based in the time scale of a night, narrates the making of a movie, through flash backs. The story revolves around the film industry or rather more appropriately the entertainment world, giving a detailed insight into the lives of people involved in circus, theatre and cinema.placed in the current times. The plot is based around Amitabh,a retired actor of Shakespearean plays whose passion for Shakespeare, his plays and theater is more than that for his life. The story highlights the dying culture of circus, the decreasing love for stage and the increasing craze for cinema.Arjun Ramphal plays a Bengali director, keen to make a movie on arts and artists, who convinces Amitabh with great difficulty , to play the role of a joker who being rendered jobless, after the closing down of circus, commits suicide.Based on Utpal Datts novel,Aaj Ker Shahjahan, the movie is a splendid blend of the arts, where a hardcore stage artist.plays the role of a circus joker in a commercial film. The Directors brother tries to compile a book on actors, through his interaction with Amitabh, while shooting of the film.

The movie(in the movie)takes an unexpected turn in the end, when Amitabh refuses to have a duplicate substitute him,in the climax scene, when the joker jumps off a hill to kill himself. With the guidance from the duplicate and the help of foliage,Amitabh gives a good take successfully, but Arjun Ramphal,as the director, aspiring for the perfect last shot,is not happy, with the trees coming to the rescue of Amitabh, orders a retake, with the hill cleared of foliage, without informing Amitabh.Amitabh again gives the retake, with perfection, but in reality sustains potentially lethal injuries.

Ritoparno Ghosh's direction is par excellence, and the ambiance of Kolkatta and the Bengali film industry created,is realistically marvelous.Preity Zinta plays a leading Bengali star, and co star of Bachan in the movie.who is in the movie,to highlight the problems of a female actor in the film industry,With a semblance to Khoya Khoya Chand, this movie also focuses on the love affairs, exploitation, poor reputation ,disturbed married life and stress of actresses and even of other working women, specially with long and late or night working hours. The photography, cinematography, lighting, editing and the overall realistic impact is of the highest international standards. The story is touching, plot strong and dialogues ,mostly in English are highly impressive and meaningful, made more powerful with the most appropriate amalgamation with extracts from Shakespeare. The songs and music ,specially in the back ground give the movie, great authenticity.

Amitabh Bachan has actually given a life time performance, and probably his best.He has looked convincingly passionate and madly obsessed with stage, theatre and Shakespeare. He has not only established his histrionic capabilities once again beyond doubt but has also proved again that he is probably the best actor we ever had in Indian cinema.Arjun Ramphal has given a great performance as the obsessed Bengali director which may be one of his best.Preety Zinta has done justice to her role, but could have done better and she was definitely not the best choice for the role.Shefali Shah and Divya Datta have acted well, and so have the other characters in small roles.

In the second stage, the movie has brilliantly contrasted the theatre and movies. The theatres, are generally no frill, any budget production, with great professionalism and where the actor and the writer are of paramount importance,The sanctity of the script is respected to the minutest detail and much of the success of the play depends depends upon the performance of the actor, for that very show.there are no cuts, retakes or camouflaging with photography, dubbing and editing as in cinema.the movies in contrast are the display of money and technology, where the acting capabilities are secondary. There is a great scope of manipulation and falsification in cinema, where the director is generally the showman, and actors puppets in his or her hands.Stage represents the simple life of yesteryears, and the cinema, the upwardly mobile, technical savvy, complicated present day life!

The story goes further to other deep philosophy of life, and revolving around,Shakespeare, has very aptly depicted the world as a stage,in Shakespears words, and we,actors in the play of life.We play different roles in our lives,at various ages and stages, and often more than one simultaneously ! In playing these roles,we often hide or even loose our real selves, and what is known or seen or heard of us,is not all or not our real self.We ourselves often do not know ourselves well !! We use make up on ourselves to mask the true feelings and emotions.Every role in life that we play, has its importance and has to be balanced well for a good survival, and there is always a scope of improvement and hence we have to go on struggling and working hard to improve,in whatever we are doing,There is no place for stagnation and one always has to be on the alert to put the best foot forward as there is no retake in life !Present day life is full of treachery, hypocrisy, competition and a struggle for survival, and to outshine the other, where each one is in a hurry to reach the top,at any expense, even at the risk of hurting and even the career or at times the life of others, for personal success!Under the name of success and the upwardly mobile life,we are often lonely, insecure, dis trusting and crave for the simple tension free lives!

The insistence of Amitabh,to perform the climax scene himself,is the crux of the story, each one to his or her battle of life,we have to fight it alone, and no one,no matter how close or sincere, can do that for us.We have to live our lives, ourselves,as it is destined and as we have carved it to be!!

Last Lear is a masterpiece and a must see for all cine-lovers

DRONA

why ? Why ?? WHY ???

Wonder why they do this to us and even to themselves!
This is what crossed my mind repeatedly, while watching DRONA
And what surprised me more ,was that all this, from big banners, big names ,huge budgets and super stars!
After the fiasco of 1950 Priyanka could have done with something better, and wonder why Amitabh lets this happen to Abhishek, who needs to do well, even to sustain, leave alone for rising and shining.

Drona has an outdated, non exciting story, where a man called Drona, posses super powers handed down through generations, and fights to destroy the Asur, the Evil Man on earth.Leave alone the Superman and the Batman series, the movie has failed even to reach anywhere near Kris,on which Drona was supposed to be Abhisheks take. The plot is unconvincing, story weak, technology ineffective and stunts unimpressive. Background music is tolerable though there is nothing to write home about the songs. To top it all,it is un believably slow, but I still sat through till the end,to test my patience.

Abhishek has looked lost in the movie,as if asking himself all the time, what and why am I doing this? His looks, dialogue delivery, expressions, and fights, all were below standard. His expressions realistically expressed how unconvinced he,himself was at his role and the movie.KK seemed to have done justice to the role of the Evil Asur.Jaya Bachhan ,who is my favourite, has surprisingly ,looked melodramatic, over dressed and wooden faced as Drona:s mother.Priyanka Chopra has looked smart and even hot,in the title song, even though she had an insignificant role

Over all the movie has failed even to match up with the ones like,Sindabad the sailor, and is a total disaster, but I still recommend that all should watch it,to learn, what not to see ever

WELCOME TO SAJJANPUR

A MOVIE WITH A SOCIAL CAUSE !!!!!!!!!!

WELCOME TO SAJJANPUR,is a truly,Shyam Banegal movie,simple,truthful,and realistic!

The movie revolves round a letter writer in a village of north India, and the complete story,is built around the letters, people ask him to write. The story is simple, but strikingly true and the depiction of the lives of villages, and the social evils have been presented, effortlessly but with an impact.Shyam Benegal has touched every sensitive issue, and the social evils existing in our society very well.Poverty, illiteracy, discrimination towards female child, superstitions, atrocities of so called upper classes of society, exploitation and sexual abuse of the lower class have been very beautifully addressed in the plot of the movie.Other existing evils, that have been stressed more, are superstitions, child marriage, ill treatment of widows, non tolerance to widow marriage, unacceptable non identity existence of hijras, fraudulent elections, political violence, migration of villagers to metros for earning money, due to lack of jobs and even facilities for agriculture, and finally the helplessness of the poor,to be driven to the extent of selling kidney, for money,to survive.

Shyas Talpade, has given a great performance as Mahadev, the letter writer, who is in love, with his childhood classmate, played by Amrita Rao,now married,to a poor farmer, played by Kunal Kapoor.who has migrated to Mumbai, since four years and survives on selling blood, and is ultimately driven to sell his kidney,to buy a kholi,to get his family to Mumbai.Mahadev helps him with money, procured by mortgaging his land, and prevents him from selling his kidney.Ila Arun has done great justice in the comic role of a superstitious village lady, who wants to marry her educated employed daughter to a black dog, born on Saturday,to ward off the impact of inauspicious stars,so that she can make the daughter leave her career and get married soon.Mahadev not only stops this ridiculous ritual but volunteers to marry her,and has a happy married life, and progresses well.to become a writer, where in he composes a novel, based on all these incidents. The victory of the village hijra,as the Pramukh of the Gram panchayat,is a very welcome indicator for the need to give the trans sexuals an identity, but her subsequent murder by the competing thakur family, and the double murder by the villagers of a cumpounder and his wife, who is a widow from the same village, are scaring.

The ethenic music is pleasant, screenplay is simple, but the dialogues touch the heart.Though the movie lacks the usual masala of locales, sex, and item numbers ,it never gets boring. All actors have done justice to their roles, and the direction ,as expected is superb.Shyam Benegal has succeeded in making a superb movie with a social cause, which is must see for all Indians,to fight the social evils, existing in our lives

Paul Newman

Did u hear the news of the passing of the great Paul Newman....... take some timeoff to look back at some personal moments and some of his incredible work as an actor.

He was wonderful in every role he played, none more so holding his own with the formidable Geraldine Page in " Sweet Bird of Youth." Page was Oscar Nominated and Ed Begley won best supporting actor; Shirley Knight won a best supporting actress nomination ..... so what happened to Paul in this film in which he was so real and raw as the young trouble-shooter out to carve a Hollywood career for himself by playing nursemaid to Alexandra del Lago, a supposedly washed up star of the silver screen?

let's not forget all the humanitarian work Paul did with all his products from salad dressing to lemonade, all profits going to those in need. He kept not a penny. He deservedly got a special Oscar in the 1980's, nominated over and over, yet never winning. Ironically the very following year he did win Best Actor for "The Colour of Money,"
but he was not present to accept the award. Paul and Joanne were private persons....stage and screen legends who did not take part in the Hollywood scene. They lived in Connecticut, away from all hoop-la!
Good for them! They led a decent life
not one of depravity as so many do in sin city.

He was a great man with a great wife/actress by his side for 50 years, Oscar winner for "The Three Faces of Eve," 1957....... the dark horse who won, one of the biggest upsets in Academy history.

Paul's last work was on Broadway in Thornton Wilder's revival of " OUR TOWN " ( 2005 ) at the Booth Theatre playing the narrator for which he received yet another Tony Nomination .

I will miss him as will millions of others. R.I.P., Mr. Newman.

MUMBAI MERI JAAN

FIGHTING TERRORISM!!!!!!!!!!!

Mumbai Meri Jaan ,is yet another movie of this year, with an anti-terrorism theme, in quick succession after Black and White ,Khuda Ke liye and Amir.

Based on the 2006 Bombay Bomb Blasts, the movie beautifully captures the emotions ,reactions and over-reactions of people affected directly, or indirectly, by the blasts and other such acts of terrorism, including those of the common by-standers and the way people encash even on such tragic activities

Madhavan, has exhibited brilliant acting, playing a middle class working professional, who has refused several offers of going abroad due to his love for India and Mumbai. He escapes the blast in spite of being on the same local train, as he travels in general class of the local train, on that fateful day, unlike his routine of traveling in the first class, daily, the couch that did blow –up. While he escapes the physical injuries, he and his pregnant wife are shattered mentally and develop severe fear psychosis and live in the constant scare of blasts, over cautious and dying every moment, in anticipation of a repeat terrorist attack

Soha Ali Khan, portrays a TV anchor, who has been good at her work and has never hesitated in showering prying queries at victims of tragedies, to make an attractive sensational news. While she is covering the blast story for her channel, she realizes that she has lost her fiancé in the blast and breaks down, and while she almost has a nervous breakdown in her grief, her boss, collogues and the channel she worked for, don't hesitate in using her and her tears to create a story for their news channel on the bomb blast victims showing total disrespect to the feelings of their own team member. Soha has acted the role brilliantly, reminding us of her similar role in Rang De Basanti.

Paresh Rawal, is a retiring Police Inspector, who has realistically showed the complacency and duck-back attitude of the police force to such event, with a sense of helplessness, but ends, with a very strong message, put across lightly during his farewell speech, that its high time we stop the blame game, and counter and counter-counter attacks and to break the chain of violence by doing some thing different and positive with an aim of curbing communal riots. Rawal has once again proved that he is an actor par excellence

Irfan, plays a by-stander, like the common man in R K Laxman's cartoons. A south Indian, in Mumbai, he is humiliated in a Mall, and as revenge, he troubles Mall owners and public, by sending hoax bomb alarms, creating unnecessary panic. Playing the role very realistically, Irfan has succeeded in aptly presenting the lost in a crowd state, of an outsider in Mumbai.

Kay Kay, the computer supplier, who has been rendered almost jobless due to the overcautious attitude of people towards suppliers of locally assembled electronic gadgets, is a hard core skeptic, suspecting every Muslim around him, to be a terrorist ,and is shaken from his communal slumber in the end, when his muslim neighbor, whom he almost branded as the hand behind the blasts, turns out to be a Sai Baba disciple and extends a hand of friendship. Kay Kay has expressed his strong emotions, superbly and naturally, giving another powerful performance after Shaurya

Revolving around these five main characters and the people around them, the story has an enticing pace with simple plot and screenplay but powerful dialogues which reach the heart. The movie has been directed brilliantly; bring out the perils of such terrorism very effectively and effortlessly. Though the movie initially deliberately creates a very uncomfortable anti muslim feeling, it ends at a very welcome note, conveying the message that the battle we are fighting is not hindu-muslim or between any two communities, but between the peace loving common citizen and the fanatics who can go to any extent to terrorize the general population, to keep the battle alive, and the only way to fight terrorism is to break the religious walls dividing our hearts and putting up a combined battle, not against any religion or community but against terrorism

A WEDNESDAY

TIT FOR TAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bollywood, seems to have made, terrorism, the theme of the year, with Black and White,Khuda Ke Liye,Amir,Mumbai Meri Jaan and now A WEDNESDAY,all rolled out in the same year.WEDNESDAY,is yet again,a movie on communal riots, terrorism, bomb blasts and above all to highlight the plight of the common man due to these unwanted activities, but its a little different from the others.I could relate to the movie even better,as I saw it,soon after witnessing the Barakhamba Road blast site in Delhi,on 13th September, live, three hours after the blast.Train bound to Delhi, that night on Shatabdi, while the blasts were taking place,I could see the panic,in the passengers, with non stop outgoing and in coming calls and most de mounting at stations before their destination.

A Wednesday,is a story, being narrated by the DG Police of Mumbai,on the eve of his retirement,as the most exciting and significant incident of his career. The plot revolves around a call from an unknown caller, who has planted six bombs, and asks for the release of four muslim terrorists. The threat is confirmed by tracing the first of the bombs, planted in the Police Station opposite DG Police's office. The DG in consultation with the CM,gives in,and the four terrorists are taken to be handed over. But to the surprise of everyone ,there is a twist in the tale, when the first three terrorists are blown up by a remote controlled bomb,at the site they were to be left. The caller then confesses, that his venture was not to get them released but to kill them,as a punishment and revenge not only for the innumerable lives they took in the terrorists attacks, but more for the scare created by them in the common population and the disruption of the normal life.He also discloses that he had planted only one bamb, that too, just to prove that he meant business. As per him, they kill hundreds, disrupt life and create a constant fear, but still continue to live,in most cases, and even get freed often, not only to continue their inhuman activities but to motivate others to join the so called Jihad. The fourth terrorist was shot by the police, and another muslim officer was shot in the arm,to cover up the incident as an encounter where the terrorist supposedly tried to run after shooting the police officer. The DG traces and unknown caller, meeting him, giving an indication of his concurrence to the modus operendi, and a genuine expression of his helplessness as the DG Police, who usually works with tied hands, under the thumb of politicians

In spite o an overdose of such movies recently, like the increase of terrorism and communal violence in our lives, the movie has succeeded to maintain the pace, and the thrill and has never slacked on becoming boring.Anupam Kher as the DG Police and Naseeruddin Shah the unidentified caller have given brilliant performances, proving to be the two main pillars supporting the complete plot. The movie has been very well directed, creating the impact of fear, almost making the close ones paranoid abot the safety of theit near and dear ones, and has succesfully highlighted the love Nasseruddin shared with is wife.his name has not been disclosed in the movie, emphasising that he was motivated by humanity and not by any religious group, and did not belong to any specific community, but was the the common man.The movie seems to be a continuation of Mumbai Meri Jaan, which projected the panic in the common man in this age of terrorism, but while that ended with a note suggesting that we should do something ,and preferably something different,Wednesday, has gone a step further to reccomend severe punishment for the terrorists, which may act as a deterrent for others to refrain from such activities.

However both were in unison with the most significant issue, that these are not religious or communal battles, but a struggle of humanity- the war between the humans and the in-human

ROCK ON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MALE BONDS !
Watching Rock On, was a real rocking experience!!
The movie lived up to its name, and was really rocking!!!

The story is simple, revolving around a Rock Band, called Magic, which breaks up due a rift between the the singer, played by Farhaan Akhtar and the guitarist, played by Arjun Ramphal, over a commercial contact deal.Farhan settles in life, with a good business and family, but is unable to get out of the blues of loosing the band and more than that the friend.
His wife,Sakshi, played by Prachi Desai.notices the gloom around him,and ,in a very touchy manner, tries to bring happiness back in his and rather their life,by re uniting the band. The reunion of the friends and the band was touchy and the story ends on a happy note with the band performing in public amongst a very warm response from the audience!

The story around the Rock Band ,gives the movie a resemblance to Jhankaar Beats, but the band is just a backdrop.to tell the story of friendship and emotions involved in Male Bonding,a theme so close to Farhaan Akhtar's heart, almost in continuation from his debut film,Dil Chahta hai.
The story is simple, but with a relateable screenplay and contemporary dialogues. The presentation and depiction are spontaneous and succeed in creating the impact, and the emotions between a couple, and that of two mature close male friends, are beautifully expressed without any melodrama. The music is melodious and above all the songs besides being rocking are enchanting and mesmerising, especially, tum jo ho and teri meri batein!

Farhan Akhtar has proved beyond doubt that he is multi talented and an all rounder, and like his directional debut in Dil Chahta Hai,he has performed superbly in this movie with his debut as an actor and singer.Arjun Ramphal has looked very realistic, and has again given a good performance.Prachi has acted very well too, considering that this is her debut film too,and has succeeded to maintain the popularity she got as Bani in her maiden TV serial Kasam Se.Other stars ,especially Purav Kohli,as the drummer of the band have performed well too.

Rock On,is a great entertainer and a must see for all cine lovers of all ages!

Debut of Ranbir Kapoor

Will Ranbir be a Super Star?
Ranbir Kapoor started with a bang!Though Sawariyan was his debut movie, the movie failed to make a mark, even though it did make ranveer famous!!
Bachna ye haseeno, can actually be considered as his debut movie.
Ranbeer has one thing common with his Dad!
Bobby,in which Ranbir's dad,Rishi Kapoor, made his debut started an era of Poppy love, while Ranbir's debut movie,Sawaria, started the trend of male stripping(the famous towel scene in the movie!)
Ranbir has the rest differant not only from his dads debut ,but from most stars.
while mot Debut heroes, pair with new girls,In Bachna ey hasino,he has been pitched against well established heroines, and that too ,not one but three, including the sizzling Bipasha. While heroes introduce heroines, the fact that three good and popular heroines catapulted him to Bollywood,is an indicator of his already established popularity.and he did handle them well!
While new comers avoid or hide their affairs,Ranbir has been openly flaunting his girl friend, and the couple seems to have been accepted by Bollywood and the audience very well.

he has done very well for a start, but will he be a super star
He is popular with his lover boy image, but wonder how long will this sustain him?
With Sharukh,Akshay,Amir and Salmaan ruling the industry for almost a decade,Ranbeer seems to be having a tough competition, with his seniors being good at action and comedy besides the romantic roles
Hard Work ahead, baby boy,so better be careful, before you get stuck with the lover boy, romantic hero image

I saw the movie in awe, spell bound and silent, absorbing the pathos of the movie and the pain of the characters. The story is old, of a family looking for a child lost in riots but the presentation is unbelievably new and unimaginably impressive.
One relives the horror of Godra Riots and wonders if we are actually living in civilised times and an educated nation. One is shocked at the inhuman acts performed in today's times, and that the people who master minded them, not only escaped the gallows but were actually rewarded
The acting of Nasiruddin Shah was superb as expected, but Sarikas performance really came as a surprise. Her come back performance in the movie after almost two decades, has proved beyond doubt that she is an actress par excellence
The movie should be seen by all and in fact should be shown in all forums, schools, colleges, work places, villages and even may be the parliament, not only as a fantastic movie but as a message for each one of us,to wake up and fight this violence on grounds of religion, caste and creed!

THODA PYAR THODA MAGIC

THODA YEH ! AND THODA WOH !!

THODA PYAR,THODA MAGIC,is a tasteless khichdi made after mixing,DUSHMAN,PARICHAY,HAM HEIN RAHI PYAAR KE and MARRY POPPINS,but what is most surprising is that this bland potpourri is a product of Yash Raj films! The movie has failed to copy the good things from any of these movies

The plot includes the death of a couple,in a road accident, due to rash driving of Saif, who as a punishment gets custody of their three kids and an adopted son along with a dog.God,played by Rishi kapoor sends an angel, played by Rani to help the family. She succeeds and falls in love with Saif and like all hindi movie ,is made into a girl, and stays back on earth, happily ever after!

The story is old and predictable, pace irregular and bumpy, dialogues non impressive ,songs forgettable .
and music so-so.
In fact the swimming pool number is a misfit, keeping in mind that the movie is for kids and for family viewing.
The story has failed to develop over the desired pace, and to have the impact it required to make.
The seriousness of the issue has been lost and eluded.
Surprisingly even Rani and Saif have failed to act well and probably it wasn't their fault, but due to weak roles, bad dialogues and poor direction.
Amisha Patel as Saif's girlfriend has looked funny in skimpy skirts!

The kids and the little dog however have done justice to their roles, for a saving grace.

One is utterly disappointed to see that the movie missed the flow of DUSHMAN,the serenity of PARICHAY,the humor of HAM HEIN RAHI PYAR KE and above all the magic and melody of MARY POPPINS

But the biggest flaw of the movie is that it has taken the help of actual jadu, played by Rani,to find solutions to the adversities, and to bring Ranveer and kids together, and not actual realistic change of hearts as was seen in the other movies,on which it has been based

With Great effort ,in the name of the banner and for my favourite stars Saif and Rani,i can give it,but one star, and that too for highlighting the perils of roadrash!
Viewing the movie can be avoided,as the only nomination it deserves in any Award Function,is of the worst adaptation of four great films!!!!!!!!!!!!

WOODSTOCK VILLA

DESERVED A BETTER DEAL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WOODSTALK VILLA,came and went, unseen, unsung and may be even unheard!
But it wasn't that bad,and deserved a better deal!!

A murder mystery, revolving around the present day trends of extramarital affair, murder, plotting and double crossing!
Arbaz Khan has an extramarital affair with a girl, who is a look alike of his wife, and finally murders his wife.To cover up the murder, his girlfriend replaces his wife in public, and approaches the Hero, played by Sikendar Kher,to kidnap her to extract a ransom from her so called husband. She is held hostage in the Woodstalk Villa, and while the hero is busy extracting the money, she elopes with the help of Arbaz Khan, leaving behind the deadbody of the killed wife. She falls in love with Sikandar and they plan to ditch Arbaz, and manage to run with the money, leaving Arbaz with the dead wife!
If you are confused, wait ,the story doesn't end now,The girl decides to dump Sikandar too and run away with the money, but is double crossed by Sikandar who has the last laugh, and the moolah and succeeds to leave India back to his mother, with the lakshmi!

Though nothing new or great, but still, the story and the plot maintained the pace of the movie and kept one guessing,of the next twist. The music and songs were tolerable and acting satisfactory,Arbaz has acted well,in his role,as he always does, and made me wonder ,as always ,that why he hasn't done better in his career.
Sikandar Khan has looked a junky, and could have chosen a better role, specially being the son of such talented parents as Anupan and Kiran Kher, for a debut!
Being a low budget movie from a small banner with no big star cast ,the movie went unnoticed though it was better than many such movies of these days like Naqab,Jannat etc

Well.if you have nothing better to do,then you can watch it at home, with a glass of Bacardi Breezer!

WATER

THE SUBLIME WATER

It was a real pleasure watching Water!
The movie proved beyond doubt that still WATER runs deep!!
The silent love story in the backdrop of the most horrifying customs of our land, the discrimination against widows, tore the eardrums like a thunder!!!
Hats off to Meera for the soul touching movie that compels Indians to put their heads down in shame,as this cruelty against the already suffering widows persists even today!!!
It is a shame that this movie had to be made abroad and was a nominee for Oscars from Canada!!!!
It is remarkable to notice the indian ambiance so beautifully presented in a foreign land and to depict such a morose topic in such a beautiful manner.
John Abraham and Lara Datta, were unbelievably superb in their roles and acting as a very welcome change from their traditional stud and suzy image.
The simple story, powerful dialogues, realistic picturisation, true depiction ,excellent cinematography and commendable acting made WATER a must -see movie.

DEVDAS

Whose Devdas was it?
Such questions are being asked in papers, magazines and chatshows these days and we are all searching for the answers in Sharatchand Chatterjees novel,Dalip kumars devdas and now in the latest extravaganza of Leela Bhansali. We have however, avoided some more relevant questions like who is devdas, whom does he represent or in fact, what is devdas?
Devdas is no longer a character from a novel or just a hero in a movie. He has come out of these and has broken the boundaries of social classes and the norms of society. He may be a jobless slum dweller smitten by the luv of the dark,sharp-featured,thinly-clad girl of the neighbouring hutment or a rich megastar in love with an universal beauty.Devdas is an emotion,a phenomenon,-may be a loser or a winner, but is love personified. Time has immortalised devdas as an expression of silent ,unexpressed love
Then, why such a loud expression of this silent love in the recent megastarrer movie costing over 50 crores?Do we need to heap Paro with tonnes of gold to highlight her helpness,or dress Chandramukhi in outfits costing 15lakhs each to bring out the sensuality or support of a nauchgirl for a jilted suffering lover ? Will the dazzling sets correctly portray the sadness in the eyes of devdas or the darkness in his life ?The viewer will probably get lost in the sets, costumes, choreography and the cinematography and miss Devdas totally. He is likely to miss the forest for the trees and Devdas may go unnoticed and unrecognised
Bhansali has succeeded in making a grand entertainer but i doubt if he has succeeded in portraying the complexity of his simple love or the strength of his weakness

Sanjay Kapoor

JANE TU YA JANNE NA

JAANE TU,YA JAANE NA,was a pleasant entertainer, but just till it lasted.

Being a movie from Amir Khan, and that too the launching of his nephew Imran,it created great expectations, which were further heightened by the pre launch hype!
Hence one was looking for something really spectacular, which I failed to find.

The story was old,a middle class boy who was very close to a rich girl, but as friends, and didn't realize that they were in love till they both got engaged to someone else!
They do realize it finally, before its too late, and as expected get married!
Does it give a feeling of de-javu?
YUP!!!!!!!!
The plot is like that of KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI!

The presentation is good and one can relate well to the present day youth, their gangs, parties, lifestyle and thinking.
The music is soothing ,dances entertaining and songs, specially Kabhi kabhi Aditi and Pappu Sala are good, but wonder if they will last beyond this month!

Imran Khan ,the hero, has done well as Jai,specially for a debut role and has looked handsome, hot and cute !!
Genelia (embarrassing name!) the heroine has performed well too and so have the other actors playing the friends of the gang.
The parents have performed well too, specially Ratna Pathak Shah and Nasseruddin, who along with Paresh Rawal have added the welcome comical respites.
The acting of Amit, the brother of the heroine, needs special mention.

The movie can be avoided by oldies like me,but is a must for all youngsters
They will not only relate to the movie, but hope they realize, how confused they are and how wrong they are in trying to create water tight compartments, between friendship and love and how blind they can be,when the parents, friends and everyone could see that the two are in love, the two continued to blissfully ignore the fact ,giving it the name of just friendship!

Am sure we will see more and better of Imran Khan for sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
