Paul Newman

Did u hear the news of the passing of the great Paul Newman....... take some timeoff to look back at some personal moments and some of his incredible work as an actor.

He was wonderful in every role he played, none more so holding his own with the formidable Geraldine Page in " Sweet Bird of Youth." Page was Oscar Nominated and Ed Begley won best supporting actor; Shirley Knight won a best supporting actress nomination ..... so what happened to Paul in this film in which he was so real and raw as the young trouble-shooter out to carve a Hollywood career for himself by playing nursemaid to Alexandra del Lago, a supposedly washed up star of the silver screen?

let's not forget all the humanitarian work Paul did with all his products from salad dressing to lemonade, all profits going to those in need. He kept not a penny. He deservedly got a special Oscar in the 1980's, nominated over and over, yet never winning. Ironically the very following year he did win Best Actor for "The Colour of Money,"
but he was not present to accept the award. Paul and Joanne were private persons....stage and screen legends who did not take part in the Hollywood scene. They lived in Connecticut, away from all hoop-la!
Good for them! They led a decent life
not one of depravity as so many do in sin city.

He was a great man with a great wife/actress by his side for 50 years, Oscar winner for "The Three Faces of Eve," 1957....... the dark horse who won, one of the biggest upsets in Academy history.

Paul's last work was on Broadway in Thornton Wilder's revival of " OUR TOWN " ( 2005 ) at the Booth Theatre playing the narrator for which he received yet another Tony Nomination .

I will miss him as will millions of others. R.I.P., Mr. Newman.

SWAMI

SWAMI

While the dream-merchants of Bollywood leave no leaf unturned to bring out more and more lavish movies every week, the true cine-maker never seems to be deterred by these vulgar extravaganzas, specially on baseless stories.
Swami is one such example of a parrarel, art or low budget movie, whatever you may call it.
Made with a simple story,a simple plot, simple cast, the movie has a powerful presentation, strong message and a fair amount of clean entertainment for family viewing.
Built around a simple story of a village couple who dare to dream to send their son to America to study and work, the movie brings home a sigh of relief for the common man.
The story very clearly and encouragingly conveys that even in today's time of wealth and rich people,a common man can have his simple dreams and they can be achieved without any miracle or unfair means, just by simple dedication and determination.
Juhi chawla and Manoj Bajpai have played their roles of the village couple beautifully and though the movie gets slow at times, one never looses interest
Swami is an encouraging movie for every common man, with small dreams and who believes that inspite of all its sham and drudgery life even today is worth living

MUMBAI MERI JAAN

FIGHTING TERRORISM!!!!!!!!!!!

Mumbai Meri Jaan ,is yet another movie of this year, with an anti-terrorism theme, in quick succession after Black and White ,Khuda Ke liye and Amir.

Based on the 2006 Bombay Bomb Blasts, the movie beautifully captures the emotions ,reactions and over-reactions of people affected directly, or indirectly, by the blasts and other such acts of terrorism, including those of the common by-standers and the way people encash even on such tragic activities

Madhavan, has exhibited brilliant acting, playing a middle class working professional, who has refused several offers of going abroad due to his love for India and Mumbai. He escapes the blast in spite of being on the same local train, as he travels in general class of the local train, on that fateful day, unlike his routine of traveling in the first class, daily, the couch that did blow –up. While he escapes the physical injuries, he and his pregnant wife are shattered mentally and develop severe fear psychosis and live in the constant scare of blasts, over cautious and dying every moment, in anticipation of a repeat terrorist attack

Soha Ali Khan, portrays a TV anchor, who has been good at her work and has never hesitated in showering prying queries at victims of tragedies, to make an attractive sensational news. While she is covering the blast story for her channel, she realizes that she has lost her fiancé in the blast and breaks down, and while she almost has a nervous breakdown in her grief, her boss, collogues and the channel she worked for, don't hesitate in using her and her tears to create a story for their news channel on the bomb blast victims showing total disrespect to the feelings of their own team member. Soha has acted the role brilliantly, reminding us of her similar role in Rang De Basanti.

Paresh Rawal, is a retiring Police Inspector, who has realistically showed the complacency and duck-back attitude of the police force to such event, with a sense of helplessness, but ends, with a very strong message, put across lightly during his farewell speech, that its high time we stop the blame game, and counter and counter-counter attacks and to break the chain of violence by doing some thing different and positive with an aim of curbing communal riots. Rawal has once again proved that he is an actor par excellence

Irfan, plays a by-stander, like the common man in R K Laxman's cartoons. A south Indian, in Mumbai, he is humiliated in a Mall, and as revenge, he troubles Mall owners and public, by sending hoax bomb alarms, creating unnecessary panic. Playing the role very realistically, Irfan has succeeded in aptly presenting the lost in a crowd state, of an outsider in Mumbai.

Kay Kay, the computer supplier, who has been rendered almost jobless due to the overcautious attitude of people towards suppliers of locally assembled electronic gadgets, is a hard core skeptic, suspecting every Muslim around him, to be a terrorist ,and is shaken from his communal slumber in the end, when his muslim neighbor, whom he almost branded as the hand behind the blasts, turns out to be a Sai Baba disciple and extends a hand of friendship. Kay Kay has expressed his strong emotions, superbly and naturally, giving another powerful performance after Shaurya

Revolving around these five main characters and the people around them, the story has an enticing pace with simple plot and screenplay but powerful dialogues which reach the heart. The movie has been directed brilliantly; bring out the perils of such terrorism very effectively and effortlessly. Though the movie initially deliberately creates a very uncomfortable anti muslim feeling, it ends at a very welcome note, conveying the message that the battle we are fighting is not hindu-muslim or between any two communities, but between the peace loving common citizen and the fanatics who can go to any extent to terrorize the general population, to keep the battle alive, and the only way to fight terrorism is to break the religious walls dividing our hearts and putting up a combined battle, not against any religion or community but against terrorism

A WEDNESDAY

TIT FOR TAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bollywood, seems to have made, terrorism, the theme of the year, with Black and White,Khuda Ke Liye,Amir,Mumbai Meri Jaan and now A WEDNESDAY,all rolled out in the same year.WEDNESDAY,is yet again,a movie on communal riots, terrorism, bomb blasts and above all to highlight the plight of the common man due to these unwanted activities, but its a little different from the others.I could relate to the movie even better,as I saw it,soon after witnessing the Barakhamba Road blast site in Delhi,on 13th September, live, three hours after the blast.Train bound to Delhi, that night on Shatabdi, while the blasts were taking place,I could see the panic,in the passengers, with non stop outgoing and in coming calls and most de mounting at stations before their destination.

A Wednesday,is a story, being narrated by the DG Police of Mumbai,on the eve of his retirement,as the most exciting and significant incident of his career. The plot revolves around a call from an unknown caller, who has planted six bombs, and asks for the release of four muslim terrorists. The threat is confirmed by tracing the first of the bombs, planted in the Police Station opposite DG Police's office. The DG in consultation with the CM,gives in,and the four terrorists are taken to be handed over. But to the surprise of everyone ,there is a twist in the tale, when the first three terrorists are blown up by a remote controlled bomb,at the site they were to be left. The caller then confesses, that his venture was not to get them released but to kill them,as a punishment and revenge not only for the innumerable lives they took in the terrorists attacks, but more for the scare created by them in the common population and the disruption of the normal life.He also discloses that he had planted only one bamb, that too, just to prove that he meant business. As per him, they kill hundreds, disrupt life and create a constant fear, but still continue to live,in most cases, and even get freed often, not only to continue their inhuman activities but to motivate others to join the so called Jihad. The fourth terrorist was shot by the police, and another muslim officer was shot in the arm,to cover up the incident as an encounter where the terrorist supposedly tried to run after shooting the police officer. The DG traces and unknown caller, meeting him, giving an indication of his concurrence to the modus operendi, and a genuine expression of his helplessness as the DG Police, who usually works with tied hands, under the thumb of politicians

In spite o an overdose of such movies recently, like the increase of terrorism and communal violence in our lives, the movie has succeeded to maintain the pace, and the thrill and has never slacked on becoming boring.Anupam Kher as the DG Police and Naseeruddin Shah the unidentified caller have given brilliant performances, proving to be the two main pillars supporting the complete plot. The movie has been very well directed, creating the impact of fear, almost making the close ones paranoid abot the safety of theit near and dear ones, and has succesfully highlighted the love Nasseruddin shared with is wife.his name has not been disclosed in the movie, emphasising that he was motivated by humanity and not by any religious group, and did not belong to any specific community, but was the the common man.The movie seems to be a continuation of Mumbai Meri Jaan, which projected the panic in the common man in this age of terrorism, but while that ended with a note suggesting that we should do something ,and preferably something different,Wednesday, has gone a step further to reccomend severe punishment for the terrorists, which may act as a deterrent for others to refrain from such activities.

However both were in unison with the most significant issue, that these are not religious or communal battles, but a struggle of humanity- the war between the humans and the in-human

ROCK ON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MALE BONDS !
Watching Rock On, was a real rocking experience!!
The movie lived up to its name, and was really rocking!!!

The story is simple, revolving around a Rock Band, called Magic, which breaks up due a rift between the the singer, played by Farhaan Akhtar and the guitarist, played by Arjun Ramphal, over a commercial contact deal.Farhan settles in life, with a good business and family, but is unable to get out of the blues of loosing the band and more than that the friend.
His wife,Sakshi, played by Prachi Desai.notices the gloom around him,and ,in a very touchy manner, tries to bring happiness back in his and rather their life,by re uniting the band. The reunion of the friends and the band was touchy and the story ends on a happy note with the band performing in public amongst a very warm response from the audience!

The story around the Rock Band ,gives the movie a resemblance to Jhankaar Beats, but the band is just a backdrop.to tell the story of friendship and emotions involved in Male Bonding,a theme so close to Farhaan Akhtar's heart, almost in continuation from his debut film,Dil Chahta hai.
The story is simple, but with a relateable screenplay and contemporary dialogues. The presentation and depiction are spontaneous and succeed in creating the impact, and the emotions between a couple, and that of two mature close male friends, are beautifully expressed without any melodrama. The music is melodious and above all the songs besides being rocking are enchanting and mesmerising, especially, tum jo ho and teri meri batein!

Farhan Akhtar has proved beyond doubt that he is multi talented and an all rounder, and like his directional debut in Dil Chahta Hai,he has performed superbly in this movie with his debut as an actor and singer.Arjun Ramphal has looked very realistic, and has again given a good performance.Prachi has acted very well too, considering that this is her debut film too,and has succeeded to maintain the popularity she got as Bani in her maiden TV serial Kasam Se.Other stars ,especially Purav Kohli,as the drummer of the band have performed well too.

Rock On,is a great entertainer and a must see for all cine lovers of all ages!

Debut of Ranbir Kapoor

Will Ranbir be a Super Star?
Ranbir Kapoor started with a bang!Though Sawariyan was his debut movie, the movie failed to make a mark, even though it did make ranveer famous!!
Bachna ye haseeno, can actually be considered as his debut movie.
Ranbeer has one thing common with his Dad!
Bobby,in which Ranbir's dad,Rishi Kapoor, made his debut started an era of Poppy love, while Ranbir's debut movie,Sawaria, started the trend of male stripping(the famous towel scene in the movie!)
Ranbir has the rest differant not only from his dads debut ,but from most stars.
while mot Debut heroes, pair with new girls,In Bachna ey hasino,he has been pitched against well established heroines, and that too ,not one but three, including the sizzling Bipasha. While heroes introduce heroines, the fact that three good and popular heroines catapulted him to Bollywood,is an indicator of his already established popularity.and he did handle them well!
While new comers avoid or hide their affairs,Ranbir has been openly flaunting his girl friend, and the couple seems to have been accepted by Bollywood and the audience very well.

he has done very well for a start, but will he be a super star
He is popular with his lover boy image, but wonder how long will this sustain him?
With Sharukh,Akshay,Amir and Salmaan ruling the industry for almost a decade,Ranbeer seems to be having a tough competition, with his seniors being good at action and comedy besides the romantic roles
Hard Work ahead, baby boy,so better be careful, before you get stuck with the lover boy, romantic hero image
