THE SUBLIME WATER
It was a real pleasure watching Water!
The movie proved beyond doubt that still WATER runs deep!!
The silent love story in the backdrop of the most horrifying customs of our land, the discrimination against widows, tore the eardrums like a thunder!!!
Hats off to Meera for the soul touching movie that compels Indians to put their heads down in shame,as this cruelty against the already suffering widows persists even today!!!
It is a shame that this movie had to be made abroad and was a nominee for Oscars from Canada!!!!
It is remarkable to notice the indian ambiance so beautifully presented in a foreign land and to depict such a morose topic in such a beautiful manner.
John Abraham and Lara Datta, were unbelievably superb in their roles and acting as a very welcome change from their traditional stud and suzy image.
The simple story, powerful dialogues, realistic picturisation, true depiction ,excellent cinematography and commendable acting made WATER a must -see movie.

Hi Sanjay
'Water' is indeed a great movie and I agree with everything you wrote in your blog. However, there was a news about some hindu fundamentalist burning or threatened to burn all the sets while the movie was being made in India. Do we know who these guys were?
From DR Ashwani K Agarwal
Water was superb
what you are talking about, happened 6 years back, when it was being made with shabana as the lead, and was being shot at Varanasi
The RSS and the local hindus objected and the project had to be shelved
three years later it was made ,not in India, but in Srilanka.though the sets and locale look so naturally Indian!
what disturbed me were two things in the movie
Firstly,it was made for foriegn auience, and like many of Satyajit Rays'movies,it represented the dark side of India. No matter how true it may be,one does feel bad, washing dirty linen in public
secondly,such a wonderful movie,bu Indians,on India,represented Canada in Oscars! what a shame
Hi Sanjay
Once the laundry starts stinking everyone will know it. Even after such a powerful movie I am sure the problem is not being addressed at any level. Probably nothig was done about the guys who burnt the sets, trampling the very basic right, 'the freedom of speech'. Movie about India, booted out of India, filmed in Srilanka by the directors from Cananda---it will be hard to justify to represent India. But this a miniscule issue as compared to the epic problem highlighted in the movie.
Sanjay, these days as the world is shrinking with faster and cheaper communication and travel time it is much easier to reach a huge audience and in this cut throat world of film production it will be naive to neglect one billion people and make a movie for a selected audience. The success of a movie and the director is measured by depth and breadth of the audience it can engage. In this regard also it was a brilliant movie and an eye opener even for me. For most foreigners it was a fiction.

Its really true
am editorial yesterday in TOI spoke on similar lines
comparing mayawati and Obama
the writer said that obama was success story of Democracy, where soner or later discrimination on color may end
but for a country like india,Mayawatis success is tempororoy rise of dalits.as untouchability, female infanticide, neglect of girl child, suppression of woman, and ill treatment to widows is not only a rampant social evil.but has been blended with religion, and hence almost impossible to iradicate
